Not every garden gets full sun. Our Shade Tolerant collection gathers the native edible plants in our catalog that grow and produce in partial to full shade: under trees, on the north side of a house, or along a forest edge. Most come from the understory of Pacific Northwest forests, so they are especially at home in the cool, damp shade of Washington and western Oregon.
Ferns, redwood sorrel, salal, and evergreen huckleberry are the best choices for deep shade. Berry shrubs like thimbleberry, salmonberry, and the huckleberries fruit best with a few hours of morning sun or dappled light. In hot, dry summer climates (inland California and east of the Cascades), even shade plants need regular summer water.
