These plants are here to help the rest of your garden grow. Most of them are nitrogen fixers that pull nitrogen from the air and feed it to the soil: ceanothus, lupine, buffaloberry, red alder, and springbank clover. Others, like Indian ricegrass, build soil and hold it in place.
Plant them alongside your berries, fruit trees, and nut trees to cut down on fertilizer, attract pollinators, and build healthy, living soil. Several are also edible or useful in their own right, such as buffaloberry fruit and ceanothus leaves for tea.
